What happens During a Medical Wig Consultation? Video vs. In-Person Consultations
If you’re experiencing hair loss from alopecia, thinning, medical treatment, scarring, Trichotillomania, or another condition, taking the first step toward hair replacement What happens During a Medical Wig Consultation? Video vs. In-Person Consultations can feel overwhelming.
You may have questions about wigs, insurance coverage, what will look natural, or even whether you’re ready to walk into a salon.

At D.D. Daughters Lace Wig , your medical wig consultation is designed to give you information, privacy, and a clear plan before you make decisions about your hair.
After more than 30 years in the beauty and hair replacement industry, I’ve learned that no two women experience hair loss the same way. Your consultation gives me an opportunity to understand not only your hair loss, but also what you need to feel comfortable and confident again.
Why I Love Starting With a Video Medical Wig Consultation
A video consultation is one of my favorite ways to meet a new client.
You can talk with me from the privacy and comfort of your own home. For women who haven’t visited a salon in years because of hair loss, this can make that first conversation much easier.
You don’t have to worry about walking into an unfamiliar environment or immediately showing your hair loss to someone you’ve never met.
Instead, we meet face-to-face by video, talk, and get to know one another.
During your video consultation, I also give you a visual presentation so I can actually show you different hair replacement options instead of simply describing them.
We can discuss hair type, density, cap construction, color, length, maintenance, attachment options, lifestyle, realistic expectations and the areas of hair loss you would like to address.
You can also show me your hair and scalp privately so I can better understand what type of solution may work for you.
Can We Take Wig Measurements During a Video Consultation?
Yes.
Many measurements can be completed virtually. I will show you exactly where to place the measuring tape, and because we’re on video, I can watch what you’re doing and help guide you through the process.
However, there are situations where I may want to take certain measurements myself.
For example, if I see an area of hair loss that requires a very specific fit or coverage, I may recommend that we continue the process with an in-person appointment.
The goal isn’t simply to sell you a wig. The goal is to find a hair replacement solution that works for your particular hair loss, lifestyle and needs.

What Happens at the In-Person Medical Wig Consultation?
The biggest advantage of coming in person is that now we can touch, feel and try things on.
You can see different wigs and hair options in person. We can look more closely at colors, textures, density and construction. You may be able to try on options so that you can begin understanding what feels and looks right to you.
I can also examine the areas you’re trying to cover more closely and personally take any measurements necessary for your hair replacement solution.
For many clients, I love the progression of meeting by video first and then transitioning to an in-person appointment.
By the time you come through the door, I’m no longer a complete stranger.
We’ve already talked. I’ve learned about your hair loss and what you’re looking for, and you’ve had an opportunity to get a feel for my personality and approach.
Now we’re simply continuing the process we already started.

What About Insurance Coverage for a Medical Wig?
If you’re seeking a medical wig and want to use your health insurance benefits, we also begin the insurance process.
Insurance plans and requirements vary, so coverage is never assumed simply because a person has a hair-loss diagnosis. We verify benefits and determine what documentation and requirements apply to your particular plan.
Depending upon your insurer and medical situation, documentation may include a physician’s prescription, diagnosis information, a letter of medical necessity and other supporting information.
Starting this process early helps us understand what we’re working with while we’re also determining the appropriate hair replacement solution for you.
And if your plan provides a benefit for your medical wig, we want to help you understand how to use it.
You Don’t Have to Figure Out Hair Loss Alone
Sometimes the hardest part is simply making the first appointment.
You don’t have to already know what kind of wig you need. You don’t have to understand cap construction, density or insurance terminology. And you don’t have to walk into the salon before you’re comfortable doing so.
That’s what the consultation is for.
Come with your questions.
Show me what’s happening with your hair.
Tell me what you miss about your old hair, what you’re hoping to achieve and what concerns you.
We’ll start there.
